Step 2 and 3 - Research and Brainstorming

Step 2 - Research
This step includes competitor research, but since we may have no actual competitors we'll focus on Visual Research.

Visual Research ideas

  • Find logos of similar businesses
  • Find styles of logos and design and text that you like

Copy and paste or save these items in a folder in Google Drive. We'll use them later.

Step 3 - Brainstorming
This is where you generate and organize ideas and inspirations

  • Create a mind map of key words and concepts that will help you organize your ideas.
  • Find visual representations of these words and create a Mood Board

The Logo Design Process

Here is a great site that explains how a logo is designed in the real world. We will follow this process for the Logo Design project.

https://ebaqdesign.com/blog/logo-design-process/

For this project you will design a logo either for yourself, a business, or some type of organization that interests you. Today you should be thinking about this and make a final decision by next class.

You will be expected to document each step in your blog.

Today we will talk about:

Step 1 - The design Brief
This is where you gather basic information about the logo you are designing.

According to the website there are a series of questions you should ask.

Here is an online freelance website, UpWork, that also lists 10 Essential Questions to ask before you begin a logo.

Of course not all of these questions will apply to this project, but today we will discuss the most important ones that apply for this project.

In a new blog post titled Step 1- The Design Brief, answer these questions.

Due by the end of next class, Thursday, September 27.

Look for Famous Graphic Designers

Follow the link below to look at important examples of Design.

Find 5 works that you like and locate information of the designers.

http://celebratedesign.org/

Of the 5 that you picked, choose 1 and answer the following:

  • Why was it produced? What message is it trying to convey?

  • How well does it convey the message? What techniques does it use to convey the message well?

  • Who is it aimed at – who is the ‘target audience’? (What age group, sections of society, etc.)

  • Describe the imagery – what is in the image - and how it entices the viewer to believe the message. Is there anything in the background? Is there a particular type of shape (angular, flowing, etc.)

  • Is it eye catching? What visual methods does it use to make it eye catching? (For example, does it use strong contrasts, pattern, what is the colour palette, interesting layout, etc.)

  • Describe the typography (lettering). Is it clear and distinct? Is it very stylised? Does it draw the viewer in because it is a little harder to read on first glance? Does it draw the viewer in because it is sharp and bright?
